The nation mourns legendary playwright Stephen Chifunyise

The former arts and culture ministry’s permanent secretary founded the Children Performance Arts Workshop (Chipawo) in the 1980s to identify and nature young talent in the arts industry.

Black Panther star Danai Gurira, the late singer Chiwoniso Maraire and Chipo Chung are some of the young talents who got their skills at Chipawo.

He was involved in the development of numerous theatre skills in Zimbabwe, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, and Lesotho. The legendary playwright was also involved in cultural policy formulation and evaluation in Africa.

Stephen Chifunyise was a giant among the greatest generation of leaders of African arts and cultural industry. He was the great conscience of the African nation and a good playwright in every sense.

Playwrighting is often seen as a young person’s art these days, but Chifunyise well into his 80s was continuing to write elegant and beautiful constructed plays.

He will be greatly missed in the global arts community.
